In addition to having a pretty sweet name, "skypunches" are pretty crazy meteorological phenomena where ice crystals form at very high altitudes, above the cirro-cumulo-stratus cloud level, and then fall downward, punching a hole in the clouds and causing the crazy vortex-of-doom image shown below. via +MaheiFoliaki:
