Oooh, shiney!

So, about a month ago K decided that she really needed to get a new laptop, after a few months of shopping around and pondering different options. I lobbied for the soon-to-be updated MacBook Pro, and so last Thursday or whenever it was (two weeks ago? wow), we went over to our friendly Apple store to pick one up.

For future reference, if you ever need to receive immediate help from multiple Geniuses, half an hour before close on a random weeknight is a great option. I counted 12 employees to three customers, counting the two of us. Anyway, it was pretty exciting to buy something the first day it was released... I felt very tall and Nathaniel-like.

Oh, and the MBP itself? sa-weet. Even the low-end 13" has two i5's and is nice and speedy, and while we don't yet have anything to plug into the make-USB3-look-slow "Thunderbolt" port, I feel like my efficiency jumps just by being near the thing.

  1. I'm still impatiently waiting for the iMac update. 27" will be so pretty to look at...

  2. I'm just amazed that you can get something as powerful as the 13" for only what, $1200? Unfortunately, there's nothing wrong with my MacBook Pro... otherwise I'd have to get one of the new ones.

  3. The thing I wonder about USB 3.0 too is whether the transfer speeds are peak or sustained. That was the problem with USB 2.0 compared to Firewire 400.

  4. Yeah, I can't really justify ditching my current MBP. The only times I notice that it could be a little more powerful is when playing stupid flash-based apps on facebook. Not really a good reason to spend $1700 again. Esp. when I can still double the memory on this one, and I'm not sure I even want to spend the money to do that.

Though I should probably get them to check out my dvd burner and get a new power cord (insulation is threatening to separate from the plug - I've had electrical tape wrapped around it for ages) before my applecare runs out on it in September.

Also, I'm annoyed that mine has not only the Firewire 400, but also the Firewire 800 port, both of which are entirely useless at this point. Only my old ipod uses the Firewire 400. I only use my old ipod in the car, so it charges from the cigarette lighter via my itrip. I have absolutely nothing that plugs into the Firewire 800 port.

  5. Yeah, not sure about the "actual" vs "effective" speeds of USB 3, but hopefully USB3 and Thunderbolt play nicely together.

Holly, I definitely recommend boosting the RAM in your laptop, I was amazed by how much of a boost I got when I upgraded my powerbook, indicating that I was often RAM-limited.

I'm definitely happy that they kept the firewire around; while I use it for just one thing (connecting to external hard drives), the speed difference between FW800 and USB2 is pretty big.
