Yahoo News: People are Idiots

Posted by Nathaniel.

A headline on Yahoo News just caught my eye “Foods Surprisingly High in Sugar”. Now, it is important not to eat too huge an amount of refined sugar. It digests really fast which gives you a spurt of energy (which is fine) followed by a crash (which isn’t).

I have to take issue with some of the example foods though.
5. Ketchup. “…a single one-cup serving…” Seriously? Has anyone ever eaten a full cup of ketchup in a sitting. The packs at McDonalds are somewhere around a teaspoon. Does anyone ever eat 48 of them at once?
6. Cream substitutes. “…a one-cup serving of powdered ‘light’ cream substitute…” Again, does anyone actually use a cup of this stuff at a time?
9. Lemonade. “A cup of lemonade powder…” Again with the cup! Yes, a cup has a lot of sugar in it, but that also makes 12 servings of lemonade.

Ok, my rant is done.

There was similar article last week (that I found from the Yahoo Finance page, oddly enough ) talking about high-sugar diets and how the AHA was suggesting a reduction in added sugar… apparently the American average is something like 22 teaspoons of added sugar per day. The conversion is ~4.3 grams/teaspoon, which means that a can/bottle of Coke is 8-10 teaspoons right there, but still, 22 is a lot.

Back to your post though, I can’t agree more with your objection to #5. The idea of a CUP of ketchup makes me throw up in my mouth a little, gross. Seriously, WTF? you have to figure that maybe Heintz set the serving size so big so as to be able to claim that it’s healthy b/c of lots of lycopene, vitamin C ,etc. But seriously, yuck. And let’s not go there with the creamer or lemonade powder – maybe the article just standardized everything for stupids-sake?
