Loaded Terminology

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

On of my facebook friends changed her status message to “[redacted] is sick. I have a cold, and I have just come to a cold realization, that our new president is in [sic] baby killer.” She then lists a bunch of youtube videos as sources suggesting that Obama is directly responsible for infanticide. (If you want DVD versions of the videos, they’re available for $9.99 to your church group though. That’s handy.) I was going to shoot her an email but people with calmer minds pulled me away from the keyboard.

I start ranting below…

dactyl Status

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Two weeks ago, I thought I was going to have to pack dactyl up and call the experiment done. However, the recent software rebuilds and hard drive reformatting have ended up being very successful to the point where I’m not even getting interesting errors in the logs anymore.

Actually, it’s a little bit boring with nothing to fix.

So, don’t worry about the stability of dactyl, just post to the blog as much as you can. Remember, quantity over quality!

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Ladysmith Black Mambazo at Lebanon Opera House, Thursday, January 29, 2009 7:30 PM.

For those not familiar, most will recall the song “Diamonds on the souls of her shoes,” by Paul Simon and his Graceland album/tour. Ladysmith Black Mambazo is a Grammy winning Zulu male choral group, that does a bit of traditional Zulu and several other things.

Cool stuff. Check it out.

Inauguration News Humor

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

I watched the inauguration on NBC, largely because they have one of the better high-def signals in the Baltimore market. Brian Williams and Tom Brokaw were talking as people were being taken to their seats and they remarked that VP Cheney had hurt his back and would be attending in a wheelchair.

I’m not sure which one of them said it, but the next quote was classic. “That’s a shame, it’s sure to bring up references to Dr. Strangelove.” “Yes it will.”

Wow. When your legacy as VP is that people consider you evil and twisted enough that Dr. Strangelove can be referenced with a straight face, it’s a sign that you’ve fallen a long way.

iTunes Tuesday: Oren Lavie

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Just a reminder to check out this week’s free downloads. Of particular note is the music video for Lavie’s Her Morning Elegance, which is really quite good. Impressive stop-action filming, and the girl is sneaky-hot.

Odds are good that your girlfriend will like his new album The Opposite Side of the Sea.

Goalie Fight!!

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

It starts off with a rather nasty hit on the goaltender.  Ok, so the actual goalie part of the fight is pretty tame, but this is a nice partial bench-clearing minor league hockey brawl.  Been awhile since I’ve seen a goalie fight, but my attention hasn’t been at its peak these days.  If anyone has a better one, I’d love to see it.

Been going to the Maryland basketball games here, but it’s not quite the same as the Dartmouth hockey.  I miss live hockey from the 3rd row.
