More Dactyl Work

Posted by Nathaniel.

Thanks to Meghan’s help yesterday, dactyl is back up and running and I’m madly trying to figure out what’s going wrong.

I’m trying to cut out a little bit of the load… dactyl was slow when it was built and now it’s crazy-slow compared to any reasonable computer, so I’ve turned off a couple of services. If anyone needs them, I can turn them back on.

Specifically, does anyone mount their dactyl home directory on the desktop of the computer for backup or to edit their web pages etc?

Does anyone listen to the “woodbox” music on dactyl?

Last, does anyone use dactyl as a dns server?

If you have strong feelings about any of these things, let me know.

Good work Meghan, thanks! So a manual cleaning/reboot was required? You’re still not sure of what’s up?

To answer your questions Nathaniel, no I don’t need to mount dactyl (insert crude comment from C-Pete here), and listening to woodbox on iTunes is more trouble than it’s worth these days. I like the idea of being able to use dactyl as a dns server but that’s not a huge priority compared to having the blog up and running.

I’m still not sure what’s up. It looks like some processes were occasionally taking control of the processor for minutes at a time and not letting the actual system tasks do anything. I’m not sure what’s up with that, although I did make a new kernel. The old kernel thought that dactyl had multiple processors.

I can turn the dns server back on. I installed bind in the first place because dartmouth’s dns servers were crapping out. I assume that’s fixed by now and it’s probably better to use your isp’s name servers anyway. It might be handy to have available though.

Mmmm, mounting dactyl on the desktop. She’s a dirty girl. Actually, this is one of the more useful things…

I’ll probably turn it all back on later once I prove that dactyl is either back to being stable or still crashing all the time.
