Death throes

Posted by Holly.

To complement the MIA superdrive, now half of my keyboard is toast, too.  So, I think it’s time to put Charlemagne v2.0 to pasture, and upgrade to Charlemagne v3.0.  I’m looking at getting one of the “previous” generation macbook pros, for about $1600, whenever the stock here finally goes on sale.  Sure, I could get the new spiffy macbook pro, for more money in just a short while, but I like the look of the old one better.  And, well, it looked like there’s no old (slow) firewire port, and Traveler isn’t getting updated anytime soon.  That’d be my iPod.  Yes, I still have my iPod USB connector, but mostly, I just don’t like the look of the new macbooks, and I like the discount on the older generation.

Bonus points to anyone who can find the subtle joke in this post.  Hint:  it’s about the pasture.

You should really look at the new MacBooks (the non-pro ones), they’re really beautiful. The only thing you really give up going with the MacBook instead of the MacBook Pro is screen size and firewire. If your iPod works with USB anyway, there’s not a HUGE reason to go for the pro.

That said, my brand new MacBook Pro is an amazing thing. :)

Er, well, it turns out that the keyboard issue…. was actually just numlock. *embarrassed* I was having a blonde moment. In fairness, from the angle I view the computer in my office, I couldn’t see that the numlock light was on. Don’t know how the larger laptops were, but on mine there’s no nice little open circle on the key like on caps lock to see that the light is on, just the “num lock” in tiny print. I also had no reason to suspect it was on, since I had just opened it up from being in my bag. Must’ve hit something when I closed it before leaving home.

Anyway, I think I’m still going to get the new laptop, since I would like to have a functioning internal disk drive, as well as the larger screen size. Given that I decided to buy my powerbook over the cheaper powerbook with cd burner rather than dvd burner simply because it’s what was in stock at the time, I think having a larger screen and firewire port is worth it. Besides, it’d be nice to be able to get a firewire cable and try to copy over my music.

Though, I guess iTunes renames the files when it saves them to the iPod, but the info is still in them. So if I copy the whole library over off my iPod, as long as I’m looking at it in iTunes (which I would anyway), I won’t notice a difference, right?

    Another vote for new Macbook!

My mom got me the macbook pro through bucknell, since they’re still being dumb about it here. I think it’s the 2.4 GHz processor and 200GB hard drive, but it doesn’t matter to me, given what I’ve been working with. I’ll more than double my hard drive space! Won’t triple it, since I had already upgraded Charlemagne v1.1 to v2.0 with a hard drive back in 2006.

That is, she got me the old model of the macbook pro. Because I like saving $400 or how ever much it is. I suppose I should’ve looked into my advisor getting me one, but I really like having MY laptop, not one that technically belongs to the dept.

I would still go for the new macbook. it’s cheaper than pro, and not that far worse than old pro in many aspects. and the new body seems very very nice (although i don’t really like the black screen thing)

I picked up one of the new Pros when I was in Oregon over the weekend (yeah, no sales tax) and it’s definitely nice. Functionally though it’s really no different than the last generation. Haha, well, it’s prettier. :)

On the down side, it’s also 1/4″ wider than the previous generation so it doesn’t fit into any bags at the moment.

And yeah, your iPod should work exactly the same way via USB as it does via firewire. It’ll be a little bit slower, but I’m not sure that will be noticeable on a day-to-day basis.

Eh, I actually like the look of the older ones, with the matching keys. My mom got me the older one today, so it’s a done deal. And I want the bigger screen. The 12.1″ is killing me, so the 13″ isn’t that much of a step up. Need to buy a new bag though.
