I hate office hours!

Posted by Nathaniel.

I’m teaching again this semester and I’m giving a test tomorrow so I decided I should come in and do some extra office hours.

Of course, it’s turning out to be extremely boring. I had one student right when I got to my office and then [so far] an hour of nothing. To make things worse, I promised one student that I’d stay here until six (which is an hour from now) to answer his questions.

So, I’m stuck here twiddling my thumbs for another hour.

This post definitely falls under “bitching”.

Heh. I had one guy consistently show up about 10 minutes *after* my office hours last term. I always made sure to get the hell out of my office as soon as they were over. Usually, because I was desperately in need of food.

This term, I actually get to TA for a majors course. I haven’t seen much of them yet. Did lab this past week (they only have four total). They haven’t come to office hours yet, but they’ve only turned in one assignment so far. They have homework AND the lab write-up due a week from tomorrow, I might actually get some questions.

    d00d, wanna trade?

My 220 kiddies have a test tomorrow, and my extra office hours this afternoon were swamped with panicked freshmen.

Boring office hours? I ain’t got ‘em. :)

I don’t have an issue with office hours if students actually take advantage of them. I think you can really enrich the class experience by targeting your message at individual students instead of talking to a big class.

The problem I have is dealing with apathetic students who won’t show up. That’s the problem that I’m running into.
