  1. Just to make sure I understand, the hitter didn't end up being out right? Technically, the ball never touched the ground after all.

  2. As soon as the ball hits any playing surface* (ground, wall, Jose Canseco's head) it is no longer "in the air" and so yeah, the batter was not out.

    *There is one exception to this rule, a really stupid one in Tampa Bay where if you hit a certain part of the roof they call that "in play". So David Ortiz once crushed a ball that would have been a homer by a long shot, but it hit the roof of the stadium and was caught for an out.
