Moving offices

I’m filing this under “bitching” because that’s purely what it is. I had to move out of my nice cozy office with [mostly] matching furniture and become the fourth person in a four-person office. Of course, this means that I’ve had to take the desk square in the middle of the room with no privacy where anyone can walk by and take a look at what I’m doing. I’d be happier in a nice cube.
The good news is that it’s going to become an office of three in about two months and then I’m going to annex one side of the room for my own use. Move some furniture around, make a fort out of extra desks… then things will be ok.
Until then, I just have to always look like I’m busy.

I love desk forts. They are so much nicer than the cubicles I currently live in. Although I’m somewhat enclosed, I can never see who has come in the door until they are already right on top of me.

I think the trick is just to make it so you can sit facing the people direction. It’s just hard to do that since you need to have your desk facing out of your cube… which will most often block the entrance.
I say real offices for everyone.

I’ve only been in my new office once so far, so I can’t remember exactly…. but I think if I move the filing cabinets to the other end of my desk, I can turn the desk so I can face the door. It’s a 4 desk office, though one occupant rarely shows up, because he works at Goddard or something. All the desks are facing the walls (no cubes) at the moment, and I just don’t think I can stand to have my back to the door. I think the space is big enough to turn the desk. I hope so. Just wonder if there’s much in the cabinets, if I’ll be able to move them.

Really, your (Nathaniel) desk in the atrium was perfectly located, able to subtly observe the comings and goings while virtually invisible and very well-placed if you need to defend the desk from intruders. Especially with your superior reach, the siege could last weeks!
My office has been quite busy with the moving, with Andy moving out next week, Paul moving in a few weeks ago, and I guess Laura moving in soon. Really, when Qun takes over my spot, he should rotate the desk so as to be able to achieve face-the-door optimal defense configuration.
