I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE!

New laptops are out today from Apple. The Intel chips have been out long enough now that most of the bugs are worked out. Pllus, these new machines have LED backlights. I haven’t seen actual numbers yet, but this might mean an improved color gamut from the screen. It definitely means that your screen won’t fade over time like normal LCD screens do. (The little flourescent tubes don’t last forever.)
The only thing stopping me from ordering a new machine today (Well, other than the fact that I don’t have $1800 right now.) is that there are rumors that Apple might release a small thin notebook in July. It would be ideal for me to get a lightweight laptop to carry and an iMac to use at home when I actually need to crunch numbers.
Check it out:

It’s really tempting considering I just broke the backlight of my powerbook’s LCD…. I’m fine using external display, but still it’s effectively a desktop now. Also now the free ipod nano promotion is out again…. Or if I don’t care about a new ipod, I can buy a ADC student membership and have a even lower price….
The only problem is the money @_@

It’s definitely not a small amount of money, but if I were to get one, I’d just get the lowest specified 15″ one. It’s really a pretty amazing deal.
I got my Powerbook in February 2004 and it cost me just over $2K.
I have the 1.25 GHz G4 and the machine came with 512 MB of ram and a 60 GB hard drive (cost extra). I also had to pay extra for a backlit keyboard and bluetooth.
The new machines are $200 cheaper, have hard drives twice as large, clock speeds twice as high, twice as many cores, and four times more ram. Wow.

I got mine in September 2004. It is the 1.33 GHz G4, the lower specified 15″ back then. I didn’t get the backlit keyboard and the superdrive which I soon regretted. But still it cost me over $2k. For this new model, I kind of prefer the higher 15″, not for the CPU, but for the higher VRAM.
I’m in general still happy with my old G4, except now I have to use an external monitor… Maybe I should try to hold until Leopard is out and see whether there will some new hardware out then….

It should be that hard to figure out if Apple is going to come out with new hardware soon. We just have to wait a week or two until someone takes apart one of the new laptops to see what chipset is in it. If it’s the chipset that Intel released a couple of weeks ago, then there won’t be any updated hardware for a while. However, if the only upgrades for these machines are the screens and the processor speeds, then there will be another update sooner rather than later.

Oh, actually I think I know the answer to that already. The new machines can use 4 GB of ram. The old chipset could only address 3 GB, so the new ones must have the new chipset.

I think it’s for sure they upgraded to Santa Rosa, and there probably won’t be any major upgrade to the current MBP models this year… But the rumored ultraportable mac might be something interesting. Who knows what “bam” will be given at next week’s WWDC other than Leopard preview and more iPhone stuff…

mmmm, shiney, me wants one, and the Thin looks pretty slick. too bad I don’t get to buy a new one for a while, but at least K will be getting one this fall.

I have to agree with you Qun. I’m holding out for a potential ultraportable. If one of those does materialize I think I’d work to find the $2K.

Who knows what’s under the curtain. Maybe it’s a surprise, maybe it’s a big disappointment….
