Insert title here

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

I couldn’t come up with a good title (other than “wow, Microsoft really sucks”) for this, but I just want to point people to this article on Microsoft’s Live Mail, the new email application apparently looking to replace Outlook Express.

What struck me was just how not-positive the whole article is… basically the reviewer says “Microsoft abandoned OE a few years ago and so far everything sucked.  Now the new program has monumental bugs but otherwise is a lot like the old OE so the learning curve is small.”  Which is fine, except that OE really sucked, with huge security holes and no features that distinguished it from Eudora, etc.  So, finally, after a few years, MSFT is rolling out a slightly updated version of 10-year-old software, which doesn’t work (well/at all) with their new OS, and has several spectacular bugs not anticipated to be fixed until Autumn?

Man I’m glad I have a Mac.

Good with electronics? Bored? Have a cat?

This is actually a pretty cool page. The guy built a tiny digital camera to take pictures once a minute when his cat was out and about during the day. I don’t like the snake.

I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE!

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

New laptops are out today from Apple. The Intel chips have been out long enough now that most of the bugs are worked out. Pllus, these new machines have LED backlights. I haven’t seen actual numbers yet, but this might mean an improved color gamut from the screen. It definitely means that your screen won’t fade over time like normal LCD screens do. (The little flourescent tubes don’t last forever.)

The only thing stopping me from ordering a new machine today (Well, other than the fact that I don’t have $1800 right now.) is that there are rumors that Apple might release a small thin notebook in July. It would be ideal for me to get a lightweight laptop to carry and an iMac to use at home when I actually need to crunch numbers.

Chicken salad of Death!

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

For those unaware, Veronica De Zayas ‘08 published a funny little rant last week, lambasting The Wrap* for the admittedly horrible ‘nutritional’ content of the Chinese Chicken Salad: 1198.78 calories, and 103.88 grams of fat (160 % RDA), most of which comes from the dressing (big surprise). Ok, so that’s pretty bad, but the funny part is the degree of righteous indignation – isn’t “don’t eat fast-food salad dressing” the number one commandment of healthy eating? Granted, it’s pretty lazy of the company to not notice/allow something like that, but still does one such oversight make them an evil company?

Anyway, here is the CEO’s response (John Pepper ‘91). Print it out and you get a free burrito, today only!
