Italian harvest disaster.
Sunday, August 20th, 2006Between severe drought, thunderstorms, and hail damage, farmers throughout northern Italy are asking for a declaration of natural disaster, with total damage estimated at ~ €1 billion. Particularly hard-hit were the Genoese basil greenhouses, with over 80% of the Genoese pesto crops destroyed, and Northern vinyards especially the Nebbiolo variety which produced the “wine of kings, the king of wines,” Barolo.
