Ok, we’re not idiots when it comes to computers. We have skillz. If you want to run a piece of software that’s on dactyl via X11, most of you could do it without a problem. (hint: you’d just use ssh -Y and then execute the program from the command line)
What if you wanted to do it from a windows machine though? Or wanted to use the version of KDE on dactyl? Or basically just wanted to see a picture of what’s happening on dactyl’s screen? (or wanted something that was faster across the network than the ssh solution).
The answer, my friends in VNC, and I’m apparently about 3 years behind. Behold however, the following picture of the desktop on dactyl as seen from the screen of my laptop here in Baltimore!

Details in the comments.

It’s really really easy.
From the command line on the linux machine (and this should work from most any linux machine since the vnc software is apparently standard)
vncserver -geometry 800×600 -depth 16
Then download a VNC client, such as the free Chicken of the VNC and connect.
Of course, one handy use for this would be looking at websites that don’t meet the approval of your current place of work. So, for example, Chris could check out lemon party from work.

Ooh, also, there are VNC clients for palm machines, so you could get a palm with a wireless connection and work on your machine during talks.

That is cool. Must look into downloading that.

We use it for remote connections at work.

John, yeah, it’s a standard thing now days that lots of people find very useful. It’s great too because it’s completely cross-platform. It really just makes me wonder why I’d never figured it out before.
Maybe I’m just too used to using ssh.

Haha, yeah. I understand, it’s like still using Vi or Vim to write code in Unix/Linux.

VNC is good stuff. I use it to get onto the computer we have at Kaktovik, AK. I’ve been trying to get the server edition to work on my windows machine at work, but I need to get a static IP to make it work … and I’ve been too lazy to get that done. Nice to be able to get to your work shit away from the office, even if you have an evil windows computer…

Haha, the mention of Kaktovik reminds me a my brother’s freind, Jake, that created a punk band and wrote a song about being stuck in Kaktovik… Pure genius…
