Cell phone craziness
Posted by Nathaniel.
A follow-up to my previous cell phone question… I ended up getting a Motorola SLVR. It’s thin and solid and has the advantage of working with iTunes if I ever want to play music on the go. (Which I generally don’t since my iPod only sees use in the car. Well, that’s assuming that Kirsten hasn’t stolen it to use while she runs.)
Back to the point… the phone is anodized aluminum, but I’d still like to find a good case for it. And I did, at Vaja Cases. They’re exceptionally nice leather and fit the phone exactly. Unfortunately, they’re hand made on a custom order basis by leather workers living in the mountains of Spain.
So the real question is this: is $77 too much to spend on a case for a cell phone? Unfortunately, I think the answer is yes.
Check out the site though, they have some really nice iPod cases too. (which aren’t custom-only and therefore cost less than gold)

I agree atht $77 is probably too much to spend for a cell phone case – which implies that maybe there’s a percentage limit? Maybe 10-15% of the item?
I’ve been looking for a case for my nano, but haven’t found one I like. I’m taking suggestions.

I’m figuring on crocheting a case for my iPod. I have 2 different cases for it already, but neither is iTrip-compatable. Since I mostly only use my iPod in the car, iTrip compatability is key. Of course, a crocheted-case is really only going to protect it from scratches. And make it easier to carry, since I plan on putting a strap on it.

I think a crocheted case is just as good as any other case. You’re never going to really be able to protect the thing from anything more than scratches anyway. (I’m basing this on the fact that any impact you get that’s hard enough to damage the ipod is probably going to be able to damage it through a layer of leather or plastic.)
They do make titanium cases though.

Hmm, I’m thinking 20-30% of the item’s value although it depends strongly on how much the thing cost.

Yeah, it’s not an easy formula. $100 on a laptop bag isn’t bad, but $30 on a $120 iPod is not unreasonable.
I think I want something neoprene-y or thick leather, both for scratches and harder drops, just in case. Since it doesn’t have a hard drive I don’t need to worry about that, but I’d still like to take care of it. (I guess a titan case would be good if I sit on it?)

It’s all about the Agent 18 hard case like I’ve got for my video iPod. Not only does it prevent the scratches, but it also is thick enough and sturdy enough to easily let you think your iPod has been encased in solid Lexan, thus making it nigh-impervious.
This feeling, of course, is entirely unjustified, but it’s an amusing fantasy nevertheless…
