Necessary tools
Posted by Holly.
In preparation for the arrival of my new hard drive, hopefully in the next couple days, I’m looking for the following tools:
* Flat-Head Screwdriver
* #0 Phillips Screwdriver
* T6 Torx Screwdriver
Can anyone hook me up?
Also, anyone know if it’s ok to leave a cd in the drive while taking the comp apart? Charlemagne (or the empty husk that once was charlemagne) doesn’t want to give the OSX installation disk back at the moment.

If you only need to borrow them for an afternoon or so, I suspect our lab can loan those things to you without much difficulty.

should be a simple operation, less than an hour.
(i thought i made this comment before, but i don’t see it).
new developments: i can access the hard drive in “single user mode”. i can traverse the file system and even mv stuff around. but it still doesn’t boot.
i can’t get it to see my external drive in single user mode, either, so i know the files are there but can’t rescue them. grr.

seems to me that’s a good thing, though you probably still have to be careful? maybe don’t run it a lot in case it gets worse, but sounds as though the major damage is in the boot sector and not disk-wide? another possiblity is to hook it up to another mac as an external hard drive to that one and then suck the data off (that way you don’t have to try to get yours to mount another drive.) dunno.

well, the new hard drive is in, and i’ve got tiger now. i ordered the wrong kind of external case, so i’ve got to order a new one and wait for that to show up (unless someone has one i can borrow?) to see if i can get anything off the old drive.

bah. i needed x11 off the installation disk. the version from apple’s site doesn’t work. it claims when i try to install it that “a newer version of the software already exists on the target disk” or whatever, but i can’t find it on here anywhere.

thanks to the external-case fairy (or god if you object to being called a fairy
) gonna pop in the hard drive now and see what’s up.

*sigh* alas, this one doesn’t seem to fit either. it leaves four pins just hanging out there all unconnected.
