Computer issues

So, my mac has decided that I’m suddenly asking too much of it to run itunes, mail, ichat, safari, and firefox at the same time. I used to have like a thousand things open at once, and it was fine. But now itunes drops out every 10 seconds or so, opening a web page gets me a damn little swirling colors disk cursor half the time, and it’s REALLY PISSING ME OFF! oh, and most of the time, when it does this, the processor is nowhere near 100%. the past few hours, it’s mostly been down under 25% !! Anybody have any ideas what’s wrong? I think the odd grinding noises it makes when i move it are perhaps related to the fan, because i didn’t originally notice any problems (other than when i panicked when it first happened and turned the thing off, and it wouldn’t reboot for a few days) associated with the grinding. it is becoming more frequent, though. as are the freezing spats. i first noticed it freezing though when i was running “bittorrent”, but i’m not running it anymore. any thoughts would be much appreciated.

You should probably consult with someone far more computer-savvy than me, but, if all else fails, this procedure is a sure-fire fix to your problem:
1. Dog-cuss your machine for failing, being sure to insult the chip fab(s) where many of its most integral parts originated. This is the equivalent to insult its mother.
2. Take a hammer to it. Gently at first, but, should that fail to help, with resounding blows that will help blow off some of the anger and frustration built up by dealing with your malfunctioning machine.
3. Call Apple and buy a new one, but be sure to avoid the ones with Windows, or you will be revisiting this procedure all too soon.
In all seriousness, though, sorry to hear abotu your machine troubles. If I could be of more help, I’d lend you a hand, but it’s pretty common knowledge at this point that I’m about the least computer-savvy student in our department.

I like Tim’s suggestions.
more seriously though, this grinding noise worries me. regarding the history of the machine, has it suffered any serious trauma? Overheating can certainly reduce productivity, but I’d be surprised if that was the only factor. I’m sure that Nathaniel has more helpful advice. (and I’m assuming you’ve run appropriate upgrades and whatnot.)

well, it suffered the trauma from my hand way back a month after i got it. but they replaced the guts completely. however, the case is somewhat bowed, which has always concerned me. the first instance of the noise, it had suffered no trauma (other than being trapped on the mountain at mdm with me for a week), other than me holding it at somewhat of an extreme angle to place it on the table beside me. now it’s very sensitive to being moved while open. not always though. it has phases.
