Product Review: Gillette Fusion

Monday, February 20th, 2006

I don’t really like shaving, so I generally only do it once a week and just let the facial hair build up… of course, it does eventually get too long and itchy and it’s time to say bye-bye.

For the last few years, I’ve been using a Mach 3 razor. Electrics just suck in general and getting out the shaving cream is one of the fun parts (Barbasol Menthol by the way.) Anyway, I generally think that adding more blades is a gimic rather than in increase in functionality, but when the Fusion came out I said “why not try it?”

For those of you who didn’t watch the superbowl, the Fusion is actually a six-blade razor. Five blades on the front for the normal shaving surface and one trimmer blade on the end. Basically, the normal shaving part is only good if you’re shaving areas larger than the set of blades and areas like your top lip or sideburns are on-order of the same size. (And for the women out there, yes, it is amazingly hard to get the little area right under your nose.) I got the vibraty version because I’d never tried such things before.

Anyway, it works. Five blades actually does shave better and soother than three. Despite my initial fear of holding a vibrating razor blade to my face, the vibration feature is really cool too. It just sort of melts the hair right off your face.

I’ll let someone else review the razor for shaving areas other than the face.
