Tim’s Guaranteed to Wake You Up Spicy Cheese Grits

Saturday, January 21st, 2006  hungry

Materials Needed:

1.25 cups water
1/3 cup quick grits
your favorite Pepper Jack cheese (approx. 1″ x 1″ x 2″ piece, diced up)
dash of salt (to taste)
approx. 1 tbsp. butter or butter substitute
functional microwave
potholder or other insulative material
microwave-safe glass or ceramic bowl (approx. 4 cup volume)
(grits reach thermonuclear temperatures and will vaporize mere plastic)
Spoon!

Directions:

1. Combine grits, water, and salt in bowl; wet as many grits as possible.
2. Microwave on high for about 5 minutes or until desired thickness is achieved. (I prefer my grits on the firm side, but a little sloshy is ok.)
3. Remove steaming goodness from microwave. (Don’t burn yourself!)
4. Add butter and cheese to bowl.
5. Stir everything together.
6. Let stand until temperature drops and is safe for consumption.

Following this recipe yields a wonderfully warm and spicy bowl of very thick, very cheezy grits that proves to be the perfect main course for breakfast, lunch, or dinner on a cold wintry day (or just an ugly grey one, like today). This is really great for breakfast, since the pepper jack adds enough kick to help wake you up, and the food mass of a big bowl of grits is enough to get you well into the day before you get hungry again. I like to keep the necessary ingredients in my office, in case I’m stuck on campus late and need to come up with something for dinner.

A different blog that I read

I thought this was pretty funny and was just going to copy it to the blog (with a citation), but it’s kind of long.

It’s worth a read though.

more laptop troubles

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

a) i feel this one is stupid, but, anyone know how to burn a data dvd on a mac?

b) the laptop is extremely sensitive to motion. if i tilt it just a little, it makes that weird grinding noise i heard before it died. it hasn’t died a second time yet. but it gets awful slow at times. wtf? the disk utility is still saying the SMART status is verified. is there something else that could be making the noise? my music also pauses from time to time, like it’s having a hard time either thinking or reading the music.
