“Science!”

Tuesday, December 13th, 2005  working

So, y’all need to check out this sweet movie of the Meissner effect in action. Bring on the liquid nitrogen!

Also, Central American archaelogy is cool.

And, finally, it just wouldn’t be science if we couldn’t test a hypothesis.

Alright, that’s it for link-blogging today; I promise.

Mid-December Political Round-Up

Tuesday, December 13th, 2005  hungry

So, in case any of y’all had any doubts about the guiltiness of Tom DeLay and his GOP cronies down in Texas, I’d recommend the following Slate article. The press renamed that process, formerly known as gerrymandering, “Perry-mandering”, on account of the Republican governor Rick Perry, who helped push the redistricting legislation through.

Also of note: rapidly expanding traffic problems in fast-growing Middle Eastern cities are contributing to some of the highest traffic fatality rates in the world. Remind me not to drive in Dubai, next time I visit.

Finally, and this has little to do with politics, y’all should be sure to check out the exploits of MC Jelly Donut. [Heads Up: Links to a minutes-long Quicktime movie] Anyways, he’s surprisingly good for an otherwise novelty act, and really puts the half-dozen wannabe MC’s he faces to shame by schooling their asses on the mic. Some of those clowns had little business even competing, but, then again, they flowed about as well as lots of chart-topping rappers these days, so what do I know?

I hate feeling stupid

Tuesday, December 13th, 2005

but I seem to be pretty good at it. Somehow I ended up having way more to get done this week than was anticipated, and I only just realized that now. oops.

so as to not make this a wasted post, at least I’m not this person… gotta love psuedoscience.

compassionate justice system

Tuesday, December 13th, 2005

A man who was caught by police leaving his neighbor’s apartment with her mp3 player, bra, and some photos got off pretty easy, with the judge dismissing harassment charges:

…the court in Harbin, capital of northeastern Heilongjiang province, dismissed harassment charges against the burglar. It heard that on the times he entered the woman’s apartment while she was out, he had washed her dishes, done her laundry, left her snacks and even fixed her computer.

1. I wonder how the woman feels about this – if she’s cool with it then it’s a case of compassion, if not then that’s not cool at all.

2. I confess to have the impression of the Chinese justice system as being harsh and intolerant, so this kinda surprised me. Either way, the boy needs to stop taking so many shy pills.

PA Pride

Tuesday, December 13th, 2005

The fossils of the oldest known trees have been found in PA. To those who mock the Appalachians, I say, “Bite me!” They have a far richer history than those rocky upstarts out west.

Holiday party?

Tuesday, December 13th, 2005

Did anyone go to the dept. thing today? I meant to, but I slept through it. Did I miss much?
