You’ve got to be kidding, part 37

Posted by Michael.

Look, I don’t inherently have a problem with religion. I live in a church. But I do have a problem with intolerant beliefs cloaked in “science”.

The new standards include several specific challenges, including statements that there is a lack of evidence or natural explanation for the genetic code, and charges that fossil records are inconsistent with evolutionary theory.

It also states that says certain evolutionary explanations “are not based on direct observations… and often reflect… inferences from indirect or circumstantial evidence”.

“This is a great day for education,” board chairman Steve Abrams told the Reuters news agency.

I’ve got to admit, I’m really getting some feelings of schadenfreude lately, on account of the creationism flak happening somewhere other than the Deep South, particularly my homestate of Alabama.

Hell, our long succession of governors-turned-preachers-turned-governors-again has been trying to ram such crap into the bilogy curriculum since before I was in high school.

At least as the problem spreads to more diverse areas across the nation, the various education and science lobby groups can no longer afford to dismiss it as an intractable problem associated solely with bass-ackwards Bible Belt regions.

When rampant ignorance is right in your damn backyard, it’s a hell of a lot harder to ignore.

i just looked up some stats on dover, and damn, man, is that place tiny! less than 2000 people in the 1990 census, and in york county. maybe they’re doing this for fame and profit.

Looks like the voters have spoken on this one.

    Huzzah for every vote counting!

WOO-HOO! MY PEOPLE! There’s hope for the state yet.

And of course, everyone’s favorite fundamentalist jackass, Pat Robertson, had to add his two cents.

Now, last time I checked (and maybe someone with less agnostic leanings than mine could confirm this), God didn’t really need anyone to vote him/her/it in or out of anything. Also, he/she/it would be there for the people, regardless.

Man, this is why I love Jimmy Carter so dang much. My man was on the Charlie Rose PBS show last night (yeah, I’m nerdy enough to stay up to just to watch the repeat of last night’s earlier show). Anyways, Jimmy got fired up over the separation of church and state and discussed why he had publicly distanced himself fromt he Southern Baptist Convention (though he’s still very much a Baptist), and he even quoted from the Bible to back up his point. I believe the relevant verse was:

“And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to catch him in his words. And when they were come, they say unto him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not? Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? bring me a penny, that I may see it. And they brought it. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said unto him, Caesar’s. And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s. And they marvelled at him” (Mark 12:13-17).

    Amen. You go, Jimmy.

Stupid forgetting to close the “/em” tag!

Should’ve only been “quoted from the Bible to back up his point” that was italicized.

That brings me to my other point, which is this: how come we’re not able to edit our comments? Given my propensity to goof up what I’m trying to write, it seems like a very useful tool to have. I dunno how easy it would be to implement, though.

Thanks to whatever magical gnome with full admin access corrected my italicization error.
