Nobel Physicist Headed to San Quentin
Monday, November 7th, 2005
Bob Schrieffer, who won the Nobel in 1972 along with Cooper and Bardeen for their BCS theory of superconductivity, is apparently headed to California state pen. on vehicular manslaughter charges.
Given his age (74, 72 at the time of the acccident), and the testimony of colleagues like Cooper who claim that Schrieffer was never a reckless fellow in his younger days leads me to suspect that the poor man may be suffering from some sort of senility, and that no one intervened in time to keep him from hurting others as he continued getting behind the wheel long after he should have stopped driving himself anywhere.
Old folks on the road: everyone knows they’re a hazard, but they’ve got enough political clout that unless the AARP initiates the politics of removing unsafe older drivers from the road, it’ll never happen. What a cryin’ shame…
