Helix had two significant animal interactions yesterday, and both show that he’s sort of fucking odd.

First, he was outside when the neighbor let out his puppy (who’s a little bit bigger than Kepler). I figured that he’d just run inside, but instead he started to stalk to dog. He puffed himself up completely and then started to chase the dog around the yard. So, in the end, the dog ended up having to go home.

Second, when we got back from the movie, the kitties had a mouse. Unfortunately, they weren’t doing much with it other than batting it around and watching it. We watched for a while and then caught the mousy in a garbage can and took it out.

The thing that I don’t understand is why Helix will attack my feet so hard in bed but seems incapable of biting down on a little mouse. Maybe he just figures he needs to take on things his own size.

The first time I went to grad school, one of the people in my class was in the first gulf war. From the few stories he told, it sounds like Jarhead is a pretty realistic representation of what the war was really like for a Marine.

That said, Jarhead is kind of an odd war movie. Usually, war movies build to a great battle, but given the lack of decisive ground battles in the first gulf war this movie ended up just showing the monotony and moments of terror that make up modern war.

Anyway, I highly recommend seeing it.
