Home Sweet Williamsport

Friday, September 2nd, 2005

Oh look, a happy/upbeat post! Mostly just pointing towards a nice little piece by Todd Jones (himself a successful closer for the Marlins, with 30+ saves or something this year) on Little League, joining the chorus that the best way for kids to enjoy sports is to keep their parents as far away as possible.

Not exactly a double-blind study

French-fries in preschool = breast cancer? They stress pretty heavily that the correlation is tentative at best, but honestly I’m not sure how bad an idea it is for toddlers/kids to avoid McDonald’s every once in a while. And anyway, it makes some sense: frying food = carcinogens (esp in dirty vats of oil), and then lipid-soluble carcinoids accumulate in fatty tissue.

One more funny

Apparently, Londoners are a full 2% less polite than pre-July 7th. “The Home Office cites post-traumatic stress in the sharp decline in manners, the worst since the 4 percent drop during the Blitz of 1940.” It’s a funny mis-perception/characterization of Brits, but if something makes me chuckle I’ll not complain.

The Onion not funny

This one struck a little too close to home, somehow. Maybe just because I’ve been reading about N’awlins, and an email from my old housemate who left just in time. Anyway, Bush’s Vacation Ruined

Against better judgement

Friday, September 2nd, 2005

I oughtn’t be posting this, but as Tim said, if you can’t keep yourself on task and have the self-discipline required, not my fault. Anyway, the blog (with live video feed) of a DirectNIC crisis manager, “currently braving the madness of post-Katrina New Orleans,” makes for “interesting”(?) reading. The fire has died down by now, but it was impressive.

Predatory…II!

Y’all need to check out this video of a spider eating a lizard, head-first.

Not safe for the squeamish out there.
