Moods again

Tuesday, August 30th, 2005  thoughtful

I’m wondering if the moods that I doctored have been instituted, and I’m taking suggestions for new ones (to be constructed after quals, methinks). Far as I know, we still need a “’splody” (perhaps to be created before quals). I believe I offered up a “smug” and an alternative “bitchy”.

I’d like to suggest a “rage” (or would “pissed off” be preferable?), and “sweaty”, because, as today shows, you can be sweaty without actually being hot.

I’m thinking the way to go with constructing the new faces may be to draw them on paper, scan them into the computer, and then shrink them down to the standard 30×30 image. We’ll see, once quals are done.

Rain delays

Tuesday, August 30th, 2005

Baseball games are always funnier after a long rain delay. The Sox need two more outs to end the game, and the commentators are getting really punchy. Making all kinds of comments you wouldn’t hear normally. The fans are much easier to hear, as well.

If astro doesn’t work out…

Monday, August 29th, 2005  lethargic

I think I’ll go into the doggy daycare/boarding business. Not sure if the businesses around here produce enough income to live off of, or if they’re living off their “former lives.” Seems like the general story on these people are “I was working in (some city) doing (some well-paying job) and decided to trade it in for the country life instead.”

Soon I can give blood again?

Monday, August 29th, 2005

The current method for identification/detection of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (Mad Cow) is to do a post-mortem brain analysis… which really isn’t so great for those of us who are fond of our skulls staying intact. But now they’ve figured out how to make a biological photomultiplier tube to increase prion levels to above the detectable threshold, bonus! (incidentally, Karli did similar work a couple years ago, which I think is cool.) Anyway, this new test is I think a lot more accurate than the old kind, which produced a LOT of false positives – not a bonus when positive means “congrats your brain is gonna rot.”

For the Baseball-Minded Out There…

Monday, August 29th, 2005  impressed

Bush’s approval ratings have finally dipped below the Mendoza line. :)

If he keeps this up, he’ll also be in line to record one of the highest ever disapproval ratings as well. So much for the “political capital” that majority popular vote supposedly mandated him.

Hurricane Katrina

Monday, August 29th, 2005  curious

Wow… This one’s pretty bad-ass, even by my standards.

I sure hope that anybody’s friends or family ain’t caught in this one, as the New Orleans and coastal Mississippi areas are really catching hell this time around.

[EDITED: too long for the front page, Tim!]

See more in the comments…
