How classy

Discovery Channel is airing a program about the 9/11/01 flight that crashed in PA, entitled “The Flight That Fought Back.” When are they airing it? September 11, at 9pm.

on the other hand, it seems like lots of other channels are running their own shows about 9/11 on or around the date as well. can’t we freaking move on, people?

As much as I agree with the notion that we need to stop sensationalizing 9/11 and dwelling in the quagmire that it inescapabl dredges up, I don’t think we should try to force ourselves into the mode of ignoring the day completely.

We should, as a nation, persuade our lawmakers to adopt some sort of official, cohesive policy that guides us in a respectful reflection about the events of that day and those that have transpired as a direct result.

We have Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Independence Day;it sure seems like we ought to have some kind of on the books day for 9/11. That doesn’t mean we need another excuse to shut down governments and businesses to have a barbecue; what I’m advocating is something akin to how events like D-Day and Pearl Harbor are honored.

Of course, the problem with any such efforts, especially surrounding the events of 9/11 is the difficulty in coming to a consensus about what sort of acknowledgement is appropriate. For my two cents’ worth, the memorial services they had at Rice U. for the 1st and 2nd anniversaries of the tragic event felt about right to me: a silent gathering in several of the community spaces, with the campus chapel bells tolling to mark the time of each plane’s impact and when each of the towers fell.

Given the choice between too many or too few reminders of 9/11, I’d rather we erred a little on the side of overexposure. We very good at forgetting how bad things have been as we return to our daily diet of pop culture and personal struggles. (Google up statistics on young Americans who aren’t so sure about the Holocaust, if you have doubts.) I’d much rather folks be given pause to go, “Oh yeah… It’s the anniversary of 9/11 again. Damn, that was such a shame…” before they change the channel.
