Summer!
Posted by Holly.
So, I’m sitting out on the deck on what was supposed to be a miserable rainy day, and instead, I’m enjoying a nice, warm partly sunny day. I think to myself, “Man, I need a nice summer playlist to go along with this.” So I started putting one together. It’s by no means finished, so it’d be helpful if you could all take a listen sometime when I’m on the subnet, and make suggestions from either the rest of my library, or yours. Then I just might use the list when we do outdoor poker at my place sometime hopefully very soon.

Any summer playlist worth it’s (margarita! –
) salt needs to have some Jimmy Buffett tunes. This is a necessary condition for being a summer playlist, although most assuredly not a sufficient one. You can find some of his most popular favorites in my iTunes library. Everyone will want “Margaritaville”, but I’d also recommend “Come Monday”, “Boat Drinks”, “Volcano”, and, if you’re feeling adventurous, “Cheeseburger in Paradise”.
For me, at least, summer is time for events like crawdad boils, which require some zydeco music. The most audience friendly tracks from my library are probably “Lache Pas La Patate” and “Zydeco Boogooloo”, both by Buckwheat Zydeco.
You should probably also be adding in some classics, like the following selections from my iTunes library:
)
“La Bamba” by Ritchie Valens
“Brown-Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison
“Under the Boardwalk” and “I’ve Got Sand In My Shoes” by the Drifters
“Night Moves” by Bob Seger
“Peggy Sue” (or pretty much anything) by Buddy Holly & the Crickets
“Take it Easy” and/or “Peaceful Easy Feeling” by the Eagles
“Me and Bobby McGee” as by Janis Joplin or Willie Nelson (my favorite version!)
“Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond (for the sake of the Red Sox
“Free Fallin’” by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
“Another Saturday Night” by Sam Cooke
“Mexico” by James Taylor
I’d also recommend anything that strikes your fancy from my extensive Bob Wills & Texas Playboys collection (or any of my Texas music for that matter), but that’s probably just my own preferences gettin’ in the way. Truthfully though, other good choices might include:
“Car Wheels on Gravel Road” by Lucinda Williams
“Me & Julio Down by the Schoolyard”, “Wake Up Little Susie”, and “Kodachrome” by Simon & Garfunkel
Okay, that’s all I got for now; John’s houndin’ me to hit the gym. Maybe I’ll post more as they strike me later.
