Occupational hazards of a different kind…

Posted by Holly.

An excerpt from my advisor’s observing report (2.4m) from the other night:
“At one point I went out to check A/C coils for icing. There
are animal droppings on the mirror A/C box, they look like
they’re from a fairly big cat (our ringtail?)”

a) i didn’t know ringtails were considered “big” cats
b) this could explain the scratching that chris heard outside the garage door one night during our november run. scratching which then stopped because I WALKED UP TO THE 2.4M TO GET A FINDING CHART!

The ringtails aren’t like lion-sized, but they aren’t housecat sized either. I got the impression that they’re in the 20-40 pound range. ie. big enough to do some serious damage to you.

i just thought they were overgrown squirrels. but cats, not rodents.

actually, that’s not right. they’re *called* cats, but they’re not actually cats. they’re related to raccoons. according to http://www.desertusa.com, they only get to be 24 to 32 inches long, with 12 to 17 inches being tail, and weighing 30 to 39 ounces.

perhaps he meant bobcat? they *are* bigger than a housecat and not something you want to mess with. more in line with the 20 to 40 pound range.

Well, I guess I’m full of shit then.
